My Gigabeat store updated
I just noticed that the My Gigabeat Store powered by Amazon was screwed up... I used to have some handpicked Gigabeat products on the first page, and they were replaced by random books... How boring is that?!
I updated the store with Gigabeat products and some new categories like MP3 Downloads. Amazon now sell downloadable MP3's for $.89 and up.
Great prices on the new Gigabeat models as well. The 2GB Gigabeat U as low as $50 and the larger 4GB Gigabeat T400 at $100.
Check it out!

No more SPAM in the Forum!
Lets hope so anyways...
I have gone through and removed any spam and spammers I could find in the forum. I also implemented a captcha.

This captcha, pictured above, will force you to enter the two jumbled words correctly before login or registering with the forum.
reCaptcha was very easy to implement and they have sample code for most programming environments.

New Gigabeat PMP?

Not too much to report besides that this one has a OLED 3.2" WQVGA screen. The guys at Akihabaranews.com does not seem to have a chance to play with it, and it is most likely just a non functional prototype. The screen sure looks nice though.
Thanks Daniel L for the tip!

Toshiba Gigabeat T401

Engadget just posted about this new flash memory based Gigabeat T401. It boasts Wifi and is only 9.9mm thin. More to come from me, but head over to Engadget in the mean time.
Thanks Greg for the tip!

Gigabeat U202 Black and Silver now available!

If you head over to Gigabeat.com you will be surprised to see that you are now redirected to ToshibaDirect.com. No sign of our old Gigabeat players. U202 Silver and Black are the only two players available. You can by either one directly from Toshiba for $99.
This is interesting indeed. I will do some more digging to see if there is any news regarding the S Series for example.

New Gigabeat pops up over at FCC!

The new Gigabeat, currently called MET401, seems to have WiFi (b+g) capabilities and run Windows Embeded. Windows Embeded is a "mini" Windows XP OS. The upside of running something like this on the Gigabeat is that gives Toshiba the opportunity to introduce all kinds of feature in the device. For example, Toshiba could elect to include IE for browsing capabilities which makes sense if this thing is sporting WiFi.
- Size: 54 x 85.6 x 9.9 mm
- Weight: 70grams
- Screen: 2.4" QVGA 320x240 LCD
- Memory: 4GB (I agree with AnythingButiPod here, an 8GB will most likely be available as well.

Thanks Greg, Paul, and Glenn for the heads up.

MIcrosoft builds new Zunes without Toshiba
I don't this is breaking news, but it is interesting to see that Microsoft now is clearly going to build their own new Zune line. Without the help of Toshiba.
"Reindorp said the new manufacturing partner is "a partner we're very familiar with." Unlike the role Toshiba played, this partner will assemble only parts brought to it by Microsoft, and according to Microsoft's specifications, Reindorp said."
I wish Toshiba could give us a heads up like this. Are they going to continue to roll out new Gigabeat players in the US? I wonder if there was some type of no-compete contract in the US signed by Toshiba when they built the Zune for Microsoft? If so, the contract should be void now if MS moves along and build their own Zune?
Lots of questions that I hope Toshiba answers soon...

Toshiba Japan releases U102 and U202

These two models are not much more than a new design of the the previous U101 and U201 models. The only difference is double the memory and battery life, now 2GB and 36hrs. No word on availability here in the US. Since the previous versions have not made it yet, I would not hold my breath. :)

Gigabeat S: Portable Media Center no more?
So it has been reported by Engadget, and here is the original Microsoft news group post, pretty much confirming that Microsoft is no longer actively working on the operating system for the Gigabeat S models. The Portable Media Center has been abandoned by Microsoft.
I guess this was expected after Microsoft released their own Zune player. But it would have been nice of Toshiba to let us know... Seems like they have known for quite some time.
"With the re-investment of resources in media experiences on connected
Windows Mobile powered devices, Portable Media Center 2.0 is the last
version of our Portable Media Center software under the Windows Mobile
brand. We do not plan any future Portable Media Center software upgrades
or marketing activities."
What does this mean for us Gigabeat S users? Well it seems that Microsoft still offers support to their PMC partners. But support does not mean a new firmware, and I'm not sure at all what it means.
"We will continue to work with existing Portable Media Centers licensees to ensure that devices they are developing come to market."
Another thing that makes me wonder is that it is pretty obvious that the Zune is using a version of PMC. Did all the PMC developers get picked up by the Zune team? I would think this is most likely the case. There is definitly a conflict of interest here at Microsoft, and you cannot either disregard the fact that the Zune is not Play For Sure. Another stab from Microsoft at all the other non iPod players out there? Will Play For Sure also disappear?
It would be nice to hear something from Toshiba, but so far I have had no luck in contacting them.

Toshiba announcing a 16GB Flash Memory chip.

"The new 16GB chip combines eight 2GB NAND chips fabricated with Toshiba's cutting-edge 56nm process technology, along with a controller chip, in a standard small size package. The new embedded memory offers advantages that realize a versatile, easily applied solution: the largest capacity yet achieved in this product category will bring new capabilities to mobile consumer products"
Source
What does this mean? Maybe a new Gigabeat featuring up to 16GB of Flash Memory. But most likely is that we'll see a new Zune sporting one of these new chips...
Still no word from Toshiba regarding my previous post.

Toshiba: What is happening with the Gigabeat and PMC?

I have heard you guys lately, and I want to echo what you guys are saying in the forum and in emails to me.
What is going on with the Gigabeat here in the US? Not much news from Toshiba, and not much news from Microsoft on PMC. Good luck finding a page over at Microsoft's website with information on Portable Media Center these days. All the old links are now pointing to Windows Mobile software.
I'm sending an email to the few contacts I have at Toshiba and Microsoft, and will let you know what I hear. Hopefully someone is listening...

What type of case do you prefer for your Gigabeat?

Below is an email I got from Proporta. They want some feedback from the Gigabeat community on leather case design. You will get a chance to win something as well!
---
Which do you prefer…? For 10 years now, Proporta has been listening to its customers and reviewers in order to perfect their case design, and deliver the best service possible. Two main designs of the Alu-Leather Case have dominated the product so far, the case with the Side Grip, and the design using a Pouch.
Preferences differ from person to person…some people favour style over protection, some like constant access to their keyboards, and some prefer everything to be securely covered up.
Which case type suits you? Pop over to www.proporta.com/vote to see the two case types from Proporta, along with details of how to vote and a prize for 5 lucky Proporta helpers :o)
There has been an on-going question as to which is the preferred case design for some time, and we’d like to do what’s right by you, the well valued customer.
