Screen photos of the Gigabeat F40
Small disclaimer: It's not easy to take photos of a screen. They really don't do the crisp screen of the Gigabeat justice.

Playing some sample music. The "Operation Guide" you see at the bottom, forward/backward/pause/volume buttons, on the screen can be turned off.

Here's a sample off one of the animated backgrounds. It's basicly an EQ moving to the music. Not much to brag about...

You have the option to switch to horizontal view. I can't say which one i prefer yet, but it will be a good feature for photo viewing.

One more animation, this time the speakers move to the music... there are also several wallpapers available, and you can create your own and save on the player.

Remote works like you would expect. Nothing odd about it. Volume, Fw/RW, skip, play/pause. There is a one more button that lets your switch between EQ settings, and I could not figure out why they did that... at first that is. Due to the fact that genres of music sounds so different it is nice to be able to switch EQ on the fly.

Man, for an "iPod killer" with a better screen, that interface sure is horrendous! For starters, that Asian style font is absolutely unbearable, and those graphics are ridiculously cartoonish. Who cares about animated backgrounds and wallpapers on an mp3 player? The only time I look at the screen on my iPod Photo is to either scan my music, or view photos, not watch cartoons or stare at the screen wallpaper.
Ugh.
I'm still trying to figure out what makes this thing so much better than an iPod. - Sun May 22, 10:01:00 AM 2005

Well for starters the screen resolution is beyond comparable to the iPod photo. On the Gigabeat you can actually enjoy watching photos in a slide show while listening to your favorite tunes.
Also bear in mind that the screen did not come out that good on my digital camera. The font is just straight up Arial or something very similar...
Thinking of going to the local Apple store and show it of today... could be fun! - Sun May 22, 10:08:00 AM 2005

I have to say when i look at that screen the words crowded and messy come to mind. Don't get me wrong, on the surface this seems like a neat device. But the color, fonts, icons etc are all just too busy and too much. Do you always have to have some sort of background on the screen at the same time as the music? btw thickness doesn't seem to be an issue. 30GB Ipod photos are hardly "thick". Even the 60GB Ipod Photo is small for what it does. You do feel the heft but it still fits in a pocket no problem. I don't see people having a problem with the gigabeat's thickness.
Toshiba's biggest problem is making people wait years to get ahold of the product. Not getting it out to the US earliers was/is a MAJOR blunder on their part that will cost them dearly. - Sun May 22, 10:28:00 AM 2005

I agree witht that thety should have released it sooner. But maybe it was a smart move cause the product is solid.
The screen might look crowded, but you can set the screen with larger font and less information. There are about 10 different layout options which half of them are for horizontal mode. You can also change the background to what ever you like, so for a less busy look just load a one color jpg on it. - Sun May 22, 10:35:00 AM 2005

To the person complaining about the "asian style" font, i'm assuming you mean the pink, blue and yellow image at the top and i'm pretty sure that was just a picture of an album cover.

I've had my F40 for just over a month now and have been very pleased with it, although I am looking for accessories, such as those used as an FM tuner and an armband for when I workout.
Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated!
Thanks! - Mon Oct 17, 07:35:00 PM 2005

Bob says,
I have had my Gigabeat F40 for about three weeks now and the only thing I do not like is the fact that it is always charging. I used it the first time out after a FULL charge (orange plug to green plug) and then played it for only two hours and it took another two hours to recharge again. Is this normal? Even after a full charge to green and say only a few minutes of playing the plug symbol goes right back to orange for charging. Again is this too nomal?
Thanks Bob..... - Fri Dec 23, 04:43:00 PM 2005

Yeah, that page is helpful, all owners should check it out.
And, iPod owners should realise that the only thing that the iPod is topping is the fashion aspect. - Wed Jul 19, 04:50:00 AM 2006
