MIcrosoft builds new Zunes without Toshiba
I don't this is breaking news, but it is interesting to see that Microsoft now is clearly going to build their own new Zune line. Without the help of Toshiba.
"Reindorp said the new manufacturing partner is "a partner we're very familiar with." Unlike the role Toshiba played, this partner will assemble only parts brought to it by Microsoft, and according to Microsoft's specifications, Reindorp said."
I wish Toshiba could give us a heads up like this. Are they going to continue to roll out new Gigabeat players in the US? I wonder if there was some type of no-compete contract in the US signed by Toshiba when they built the Zune for Microsoft? If so, the contract should be void now if MS moves along and build their own Zune?
Lots of questions that I hope Toshiba answers soon...

Meh. When our Gigabeats die, a smaller, thinner and more convenient Zune 2.0 will probably be out and we'll all be rid of Toshiba, the-company-that-created-an-ipod-killer-but-left-it-to-die.
Good riddance... - Thu May 17, 06:30:00 AM 2007

Whoever at Toshiba is responsible for strategic marketing of the Gigabeat, you should be fired immediately. Toshiba R&D designed and built the BEST portable media player in the world, but due to horrible marketing (NO ACCESSORIES), the Gigabeat will die. SOMEONE BUILD ME A DOCKING PORT!!!

Toshiba announced two new Gigabeat PMC models today on their Japanese website (sorry, most text is in Japanese).
They are widescreen models (480x272, 16:9 aspect ratio), with either 40GB or 80GB drives. They also have the One-Seg tuner for digital terrestrial TV broadcasts. I believe the availability is June 1 in Japan.
No word on whether they will offer US versions (in the manner of the MESV30K).
